Metal Gear Survive How to Get Rewards From Blue Missions in Salvage

This page contains tips and strategies designed to help players succeed in Metal Gear Survive's co-op Salvage Missions.

To unlock Salvage missions, you must complete Chapter 8 of the single player mode. This unlocks the "easy" difficulty on the "Wrecked Base" map. This map was the location for Chapter 8's mission. Completing Chapter 12 unlocks the "Fallen Village" map. Once you clear Chapter 19, you unlock the third map called "Deserted Mine" as well as the "normal" difficulty.

The Difference Between "Easy" and "Normal"

For a large chunk of the game, you will only have access to the "easy" difficulty in Salavage missions. The rewards can go up to rare (blue) if you get an S rank on the mission by maxing out the Iris energy mined. Enemies are level 20 and feature only three types; Wanderers, Bombers, and Armored. There are Detonators, but they are only in side missions, not actually attacking.

Matches on the "normal" difficulty feature a wider variety of foes all leveled at 30 or higher. The rewards go up to legendary (purple) for earning an S rank, and rare gear for B ranks or higher. There is plenty of Kuban energy to earn in both difficulties, so it is a great way to level up quickly.

Co-Op Tips

Here you will find helpful tips and strategies for surviving the Easy and Normal multiplayer Salvage missions.

Beginner Tips

The following information is for players attempting their first few Salvage missions.

Dig at Max Speed

If you access the wormhole digger at the start of each wave, there is an option to speed up the dig for the cost of 5,000 Kuban energy. In co-op the Kuban energy is shared between all players until the reward screen. This is chump change to the amount you'll get at the end. The fast it digs, the faster you will hit S rank and get the best loot.

Build Defenses Along the Enemy Path

Putting fences right around the digger may sound like a good idea, but they'll be destroyed at the end of each wave by the digger's blast. Instead, focus on building defenses along the paths the Wanderers take. These are clearly marked and will stay up for multiple waves, as long as you keep them up.

Juke and Stab

You don't need to take on every Wanderer head on. They are pretty slow and stupid. Run around them until you get the prompt the shank them in the back. It's a quick kill and doesn't wear down any of your weapons or use your ammo. This is especially handy for Bombers!

Cocktails FTW

If you feel overwhelmed by a large group of Wanderers, toss a molotov cocktail their way. It'll weed out the weakened zombies and slow down the rest. Throw it when they are bunched up behind a wall to be super effective!

Wormhole transport

If you do need to get back to the wormhole digger in a pinch, use a wormhole transporter. This item appears in every co-op match in your left gadgets menu. Place the small transporter where ever you'd like and at any time you can teleport to its location. This is great for when you are far away from the digger on a side mission or in a bind.

Do side missions

Before each wave, two side missions pop up on your map as blue area markers. These are to get specific supplies in a box to build handy tools. In "easy" matches, the items can be molotov cocktails or fences, but in "normal" matches they can be for gadgets as cool as a Walker. They are super helpful and build up your personal score. Be aware of the Detonators though!

Advanced Tips

For those Captains who've played their share of Salvage.

Kill Detonators for Lots of Loot

Along with those side missions there is a Detonator enemy that guards the item box. If it senses a threat at all, it blows up. When your level is comproable to the Detonators, you can sneak up on them and stab them. This allows you to loot the Detonator as well as get the side mission items for big points and more goodies!

Shank Armored Foes to Find their Weak Spot

Armored foes can take tons of bullets and waste precious time. To quickly take down one of these baddies, stab them in the back to pop off their helmet. This normally lethal shank won't kill them, but it does stun them to the ground and reveal their head for critical hits. Fire a couple arrows or bullets into their heads for a much faster kill.

Bows and Arrows are King

Guns and bullets seem like a go to for handling masses of zombies, but a solid bow with arrows will take you so much further. The magic is in the fact the you can pick up used arrows. Almost every arrow that connects with a Wanderer can be picked up and reused. This helps cut down on crafting time and lets you keep enemies at bay.

Get Bonus Iris Energy in Red Areas

On the map there are a couple red areas that indicate where enemies hang out before and during waves. In between waves, scout out these areas for loot and little orbs of Iris energy. These can be worth 500 or 1,000 extra Iris energy to help push your team over the top.
